Ingredient Science: Inulin & Probiotic Strain Science—Why Specificity Matters
Prebiotics and probiotics are different. Prebiotics are substrates—often fermentable fibers—that are used by microorganisms in the gut. Probiotics are live microorganisms that are identified by genus, species and, when applicable, strain. For probiotic science, that level of specificity matters.
Inulin: a prebiotic fiber
Inulin is a fermentable dietary fiber found naturally in foods such as chicory root, onions, garlic and asparagus. It resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and can be fermented by colonic microbes, producing metabolites including short-chain fatty acids. Because it is fermentable, larger amounts can also cause gas, bloating or changes in stool pattern in some people.
Why probiotic names matter
Research on one probiotic strain cannot automatically be applied to another organism—even one in the same species. Evidence depends on the exact microorganism or strain, dose or CFU level, population and outcome studied. “Contains probiotics” is therefore not enough to establish a specific clinical effect.

Final commercial strain designations and CFU amounts must be taken from the finished manufacturer-approved Supplement Facts panel; research on one strain should not be generalized to another.

AAP safety context
The AAP’s 2026 guidance says probiotic supplements are not routinely needed for all children and should be considered selectively. Extra caution is warranted in children who are seriously ill or immunocompromised, where live microbial products can carry greater risk. Food patterns rich in fiber and, when appropriate, fermented foods remain the starting point for most healthy children.
FDA label context
FDA classifies live microbials used to supplement the diet as dietary ingredients. Normal structure/function descriptions must be truthful and substantiated; they should not be converted into claims that a supplement diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents a disease.
