Ingredient Science: Zinc—Growth, Cell Division and Normal Immune Function
Zinc is an essential mineral that participates in hundreds of enzyme and regulatory processes. It is involved in normal growth, DNA and protein synthesis, wound healing, taste and immune function.
Normal immune function is not “immune boosting”
Because zinc has established roles in immune-cell biology, it is appropriate to describe zinc as necessary for normal immune function. It is not appropriate to turn that fact into a claim that routine zinc supplementation prevents infections or “boosts” immunity in healthy children. The AAP’s 2026 guidance specifically cautions against that interpretation.
Food sources
Meat, seafood, dairy products, beans, nuts and fortified foods can provide zinc. Absorption from plant foods can be lower because phytate binds zinc, but varied eating patterns can still meet needs.
Why total intake matters
Excess zinc can cause adverse effects and, over time, can interfere with copper status. When comparing supplements, consider all sources rather than assuming a higher zinc number is preferable.
