Ingredient Science: Vitamin A—Vision, Growth and Cell Development

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin involved in normal vision, cell differentiation, epithelial integrity and growth. Those are normal physiologic roles—not evidence that taking extra vitamin A makes a healthy child grow faster or prevents infection.

What vitamin A does

Retinal, a vitamin A derivative, participates in the visual cycle. Retinoic acid helps regulate gene expression and the development and maintenance of many tissues. Because vitamin A is stored in the body, more is not automatically better.

Food comes first

Preformed vitamin A is found in foods such as eggs and dairy products, while provitamin A carotenoids are found in orange, red and dark-green fruits and vegetables. A varied diet is the usual starting point for meeting nutrient needs.

Supplement context and safety

The AAP advises that most healthy children eating a balanced diet do not need vitamin supplementation beyond recommended dietary allowances. High supplemental intakes of preformed vitamin A can be toxic, so families should avoid stacking multiple vitamin A-containing products without considering total intake.
