Copper is an essential trace mineral used by enzymes involved in energy production, connective-tissue formation, iron metabolism, antioxidant defense and nervous-system biology.

Why copper and zinc are often considered together

Minerals can influence one another’s absorption and metabolism. Persistently high zinc intake can reduce copper absorption, which is one reason well-designed multinutrient formulas consider mineral balance rather than maximizing one ingredient in isolation.

Food sources

Shellfish, nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes and some organ meats are copper-rich foods. Most children consuming a varied diet obtain copper from food.

Supplement context

Neither deficiency nor excess is desirable. Children with certain medical or genetic conditions can have unusual copper needs or handling, so supplemental copper should not be used therapeutically without clinician guidance.
