Ingredient Science: The B Vitamins—B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, Biotin, Folate and B12
The B vitamins are a family of water-soluble nutrients that act mainly as enzyme cofactors in energy metabolism, cell division, nervous-system function and blood-cell formation. “Supports energy metabolism” means helping normal biochemical pathways process nutrients; it should not be read as a promise that a supplement gives a child extra energy.
The eight B vitamins in the current DocVites multivitamin architecture
- Thiamin (B1): carbohydrate metabolism and normal nerve function.
- Riboflavin (B2): precursor to FAD and FMN, cofactors in energy and oxidation-reduction reactions.
- Niacin (B3): precursor to NAD and NADP, central to cellular energy metabolism.
- Pantothenic acid (B5): component of coenzyme A, important in fatty-acid and energy metabolism.
- Vitamin B6: amino-acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis and hemoglobin-related pathways.
- Biotin (B7): cofactor for carboxylase enzymes involved in fatty-acid and glucose metabolism.
- Folate (B9): one-carbon metabolism, DNA synthesis and normal cell division. DocVites formulation specifications use calcium L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) as the folate source.
- Vitamin B12: normal neurologic function, DNA synthesis and red-blood-cell formation. Current DocVites specifications use methylcobalamin as the B12 source.
Form does not replace dose and need
Names such as “5-MTHF” or “methylcobalamin” identify chemical forms. They do not by themselves establish that a product is clinically superior for every child. The relevant questions remain the child’s age, diet, clinical need, amount per serving and total intake.
